THE GOVERNMENT OF ONTARIO HAS INTRODUCED A NEW LEGISLATION TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF PATIENTS

(PROTECTING PATIENTS ACT, 2017)


THE PURPOSE OF THIS ACT IS TO PROTECT CLIENTS AGAINST SEXUAL ABUSE.


The COLLEGE OF MASSAGE THERAPISTS OF ONTARIO (CMTO)

HAVE AMENDED THEIR STANDARDS OF PRACTICE

TO ENSURE THEY ARE IN ALIGNMENT WITH THE NEW LEGISLATION.


THIS WILL BE NOW KNOWN AS THE

“STANDARDS FOR MAINTAINING PROFESSIONAL BOUNDARIES AND PREVENTING SEXUAL ABUSE”


AS A REGULATED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL, YOUR

REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPIST

MUST AND WILL NOW ADHERE TO THESE NEW STANDARDS.


SIGNIFICANT CHANGES THAT WILL AFFECT YOUR TREATMENT INCLUDE:


RECEIVING WRITTEN CONSENT FOR THE TREATMENT OF SENSITIVE AREAS WHICH HAS BEEN REVISED TO INCLUDE

    • BREAST
    • CHEST WALL
    • GLUTEAL REGION
    • UPPER INNER THIGH REGION (INCLUDING ANTERIOR PELVIS)

    If clinically indicated, Your Therapist may treat these sensitive areas but will need to receive your written, informed consent

    (ensuring you are aware of the assessment and treatment proposed, including any risks, benefits and other aspects of informed consent.)
